The Blue Mountain Railway – A steam engine ride
The Nilgiri Mountain railway running in the Queen of Hill stations is built by the British in early 1908 and was initially operated by Madras Railway. The railway is operated by steam locomotive. Now diesel locomotives have taken over from steam on the section between Coonoor to Ooty and vice versa. The train runs on steam locomotive on the section between Coonoor – Mettupalayam . Due to its popularity, a number of passengers have requested the Southern Railways to convert the section from Coonoor to Ooty to steam locomotive, extending the present steam traction between Mettupalayam to Coonoor.
Pykara Lake and Pykara water falls
Pykara is set at a distance of 21 km from Ooty. Pykara a beautiful village with a gushing river , has a dam and a power plant. Its because of the dam , the backwater forms a big lake which is called Pykara lake . At the end of the dam , the river falls from a height which is known as PykaraFalls .This is how this place is known as a famous picnic spot. There are places to visit on the way to Pykara. We have the pine forest which is a famous picnic spot for tourists which lies on the main road via Ooty – Mysore . Further you can the see the excellent scenery of the 6th mile and the 9th mile which is also called ‘The shooting spot’ of Ooty . There has been many cinemas shot in this specific area .
The fourth highest peak in South India and is 9 km away from Ooty. The image itself speaks of its 360 degree panoramic charisma and picturesque views. The average number of viewers in 2001-2002 was 3500 per day in season and 700 per day in the off season. It is an wonderful trekking spot. There is a reserved forest around this peak.
Lake and Boat House
The lake is surrounded by groves of Eucalyptus trees with a railway line running along one shore. During summer boat races and boat pageantry are organised. Many tourists actively participate in the boat races. Motor boats and row boats are available for boating.
The Garden is visited by thousands of visitors through out the year. There are different variety of roses of unusual colors like green and black . The Garden has been laid out with rose tunnels, pergolas and bowers with rose creepers.
This Government botanical garden was laid out in 1848 and has around thousand species of plants, shrubs, ferns, trees, herbal and bonsai plants etc. In the center of the garden lies a fossilized tree trunk estimated to be 20 million years ago. Flower show is conducted in the garden every year during summer. Ooty is fully crowded during flower show.
